A Kenyan startup, eWaka, is spearheading a significant shift in African transportation by focusing on electrifying the continent’s burgeoning delivery market. Founded in 2021 by Celeste Vogel and Jimmy Tune, eWaka is strategically positioning itself to capture a substantial share of the delivery sector by offering a comprehensive service that facilitates doorstep deliveries through a fleet of electric bikes.
Expanding Electrification Beyond Buses
While other players like BasiGo have recently made headlines with the launch of Kenya’s first electric bus assembly line in 2024, producing the locally developed E9 Kubwa model, eWaka’s ambition lies in electrifying a different, yet equally vital, segment of the transport ecosystem. The company’s core strategy involves selling its electric bikes not only to large delivery fleets but also to individual riders, thereby democratizing access to sustainable transportation solutions.
A Comprehensive Delivery Solution
eWaka’s vision extends beyond simply selling vehicles. The startup aims to provide a holistic service that supports the entire delivery chain. This comprehensive approach is designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities within Africa’s rapidly growing e-commerce and logistics landscape. By offering reliable and cost-effective electric mobility, eWaka is poised to contribute significantly to reducing operational costs for businesses and improving the livelihoods of delivery personnel, while simultaneously promoting cleaner air in urban centers across the continent.
