More than 900 Google employees have signed an internal petition calling on the technology giant to pledge that it will not provide its services to U.S. immigration agencies. The letter, addressed to Google’s leadership, specifically demands that the firm refrain from bidding on a cloud computing contract for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The signatories argue that providing technical infrastructure to agencies such as CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would make the company complicit in what they describe as inhumane treatment of migrants at the U.S. border.

Ethical Accountability in the Cloud

The petition highlights a growing rift between Silicon Valley’s workforce and executive leadership regarding the moral boundaries of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Employees expressed concern that Google’s technology could be utilized to streamline surveillance, detention, and deportation efforts. “By providing technology to ICE and CBP, Google is choosing to profit from a system that is actively violating human rights,” the letter stated, referencing the ongoing controversy surrounding the separation of families and the conditions of detention facilities.

This collective action follows a precedent of employee activism within the company. Previously, Google staff successfully pressured the firm to withdraw from “Project Maven,” a Pentagon initiative involving drone footage analysis, and voiced significant opposition to “Project Dragonfly,” a censored search engine proposed for the Chinese market. The current demand underscores a shift in the tech industry, where workers are increasingly leveraging their specialized skills to demand greater corporate social responsibility.

A Growing Culture of Internal Dissent

The protest comes at a sensitive time for Google as it competes with rivals like Amazon and Microsoft for lucrative government cloud contracts. While leadership has previously argued that engaging with the government allows the company to influence the ethical use of technology from within, many employees remain unconvinced. They argue that certain agencies’ track records should disqualify them from accessing Google’s powerful data-processing tools.
